Pyromania

Pyromania is a type of impulse control disorder, again not looked at as a addiction base but treatment has many aspects of addiction treatments.

Pyromania is an impulse to start fires deliberately to relieve tension and typically includes feelings of gratification or relief afterward. Unlike arsonists, pyromaniacs start fires to induce euphoria, and often fixate on institutions of fire control like fire stations and firefighters. They will often remain at or near the scene of the firs just to watch the fire fighters get the fire under control.

Pyromaniacs are treated mostly through behavioral modification therapy. The prognosis for treatment is generally fair to poor. Treatment appears to work in 95% of children that exhibit signs of pyromania, which include family therapy and community intervention. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are also used to treat pyromania.

Pyromania is a rare disorder. Pyromania can occur in children as young as age three, but it is rare in adults and rarer in children. Only a small percentage of children and adolescents arrested for arson have pyromania. Pyromania is primarily a male disorder with 90% diagnosis male.

  1. My daughter is 17 and she plays with a lighter all the time. I don't think she has set any fires but I'm not sure. She likes to see the fire burn and she seems almost transfixed with it. I guess I need to look into this further and possibly talk to her doctor.

  2. I've heard the two terms and never considered that they were two different problems. Thanks for clarifying this.

  3. I'm with you Rhonda. I had no idea they were different. I've always used the terms interchangeably. I stand corrected.

  4. I wonder why the percentage of males is so high. 9 out of 10 sufferers is pretty significant. It may be in the genetics, it would almost have to be. With the progress they are making, maybe this will be identified and controlled some day.

  5. I think all kids have a fascination with fire at some point. I remember burning the papers in a burn barrel and poking through it with a stick while it burned. I even got burnt a couple of times and got in trouble a whole lot more times. I know these conditions go beyond that, but maybe that's how they started out.

  6. This sounds like my younger brother. He has always like playing with fire. Several times he has burned himself, but it didn't stop it. I think it started out with the candles my Mom kept around the house. He would sit and stare at them for hours, like he was unable to move.

  7. I think all kids go through a period where they are drawn to fire. I've found a few things around my home that make me think my teen is playing with fire. I found the tip of a plastic ball point pen that had been burned off. My daughter said she had drawn all over her leg, but I think the ink leaked on her when the pen broke in two. I'm going to check her room the next time she leaves.

  9. Ever notice how alll fire departments are primarily white? Ocassional token non-white here or there, but it seems obvious they reserve these soft easy money spots for those who fit their ideal for their "fraternity".
And the pay/benefit package!!! This is an industry which needs privitization, let alone austerity.
If not for that family those three men would still be alive.

  16. I think what you posted made a lot of sense. But, think on this, suppose you typed a
catchier title? I ain't saying your content isn't solid.
, however what if you added a title that makes people desire more?
I mean "Pyromania" is kinda vanilla. You should peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create article headlines to grab viewers to open the links. You might add a video or a related picture or two to grab people excited about everything've got to say.

Just my opinion, it could bring your posts a little livelier.
