My Medicine Cabinet is My Child’s Dealer

Okay, my medicine cabinet is not really my child’s dealer, but it could have been easily had I not know the risks that lingered in there, tempting my child to use to gain a high.

Everyone take a moment to go to your medicine cabinet and look at what is easily assessable to your children. You would be surprised at what our kids are getting high on today, and you are putting it right in their hands. You purchase it, and stock it – over the counter drugs such as cough and cold medicine. It is the new drug of choice for kids in the age range of 13 to 16. Why - because no one would necessarily expect it nor question why they are carrying a bottle of cough syrup or cold medications around with them.

It all seems innocent enough – just how high could one get – right? Well know this.. Hospitals have reported dozens of deaths over the past two years and even more overdoses from over the counter medicines such as Robitussin, Nyquil, Vicks Formula 44, and Coricidin HBP Cough and Cold tablets. These medicines contain a chemical called Dextromethorphan (DXM). The Drug Enforcement Administration classifies DXM as a “drug of concern” because if misused it can be very dangerous. DXM is a synthetic drug that is chemically similar to morphine and has been added to cough syrups and some cold medications since the 1970’s.

DXM is cheap for kids to get, even if it isn’t in their home medicine cabinet, and even cheaper then typical street drugs. Top it off; there is a ton of information online that informs kids just how much of certain OTC medications they need to take to achieve a high. Here is the kicker, although Drug Enforcement Administration classifies DXM as a “drug of concern”, there are no legal restrictions on purchasing it. Kids can buy it on the net! Some common names kids use to reference this type of drug use are Robo, Skittles, Triple C’s, Dex, Vitamin D, and Tussin. If you hear these words, have a sit down, assess the situation carefully, and get intervention help if necessary. Educate your child the risks associated with using OTC medications out of context.

However, also keep in mind that DMX is not the only OTC drug our youth are turning to - diet pills, sleep aids, and motion sickness medication are a few of the other commonly abused OTC the youth are using today. OTC drugs are dangerous and can easily result in overdose or death. Parents should be aware of the dangers. Educate yourself on the drugs you bring in to your home. Lock them up if you have concerns otherwise monitor them closely so you can quickly assess large dosages missing at any one given time.

  1. Like most people, I kept my prescription drug bottles in sight, where I would remember to take them. I saw a Law & Order episode where the kids all brought pills and threw them into a common bowl. They each just took a handful of pills and washed them down with alcohol. I guess I've lived a very sheltered life, even though I have kids. Now, I keep all meds under lock and key, even the aspirin. No one takes anything in this house without going through me. I wish all parents would take the same precautions.

  2. I'm fearful of bringing any drug into the house whether it's a doctors prescription or over the counter. It seems like there is no limit to the lengths that some kids will go to just to get high and it seems like there is a danger with any drug there is. What is this world coming to and is there anything that will save it?

  3. I grew up in a house that had a medicine cabinet full of prescriptions. I don't remember what they were except for the Valium that my Mom took so she could deal with 6 kids. The thought never crossed my mind to touch the bottle, let alone take one of the pills. What has changed to make drugs so popular? Am I just naive?

  4. I went to Walmart last night to get some cold medicine for my wife. It looked like they had sold out of everything. When I looked closer I noticed there were cards that said take this to the pharmacy to be filled. Sounded strange, but I did. I asked why it was back there instead of on the shelf and the guy told me that people were stealing it to make drugs. I must be getting old, because I sure don't understand what the heck is going on.

  5. I really appreciate it that you tell what the names are that the kids use to identify these drugs. Sometimes it seems like they are speaking a different language, especially when I look at e-mails and phone texts. I think I'm getting old.

  6. I just looked in my medicine cabinet and OMG, you are so right. I had old prescriptions that I had never discarded as well as all of the new ones. Some bottles had only 1 or 2 pills left when I got the refill and I never used what was left before that. I had 7 different kinds of cough medicines. I have since gotten rid or everything that is not a current prescription and I have moved those to my room. I will be more watchful of what I buy and where I store it. My kids are pre teens now and they are becoming more aware of drugs and what they can do. Thanks for this article.

  7. After I read this article I went in and looked in the hall closet. I have darned near everything you listed. I also have several prescription drugs in there and some of them are outdated and needed to be discarded. I moved all of it to my room, which is generally locked.

  8. I shy away from taking prescription drugs. I don't think the drug companys know enough about the long term effects of some of the newer drugs. But, the over the counter stuff, I never considered any of it could be a problem. I need to go through my supply and evaluate what's there and get rid of potential abuse substances. Thanks for the tips.

  9. I had a hip replacement and the doctor gave me some pain killers. I took them for the first 24 hours and then quit. I noticed the bottle was still there a couple of months later and I picked it up with the intent of throwing it out. It was empty. There is only my son and I in the house so I was pretty sure I knew where they went. I asked him about it when he got home from school. He denied taking them but I kept pushing and he finally admitted that he had sold them to one of his friends. I'm glad he didn't take them, but I'm concerned that he sold them. We had a long talk and I hope he heard what I had to say. I'll be watching what I bring into the house now.
